Lesson Plan Format
There are as many ways to structure a lesson plan as there are different teaching
situations, and no single plan can serve as a model for all situations. A
proper plan format is what all you need to drive the class energetically. It
helps the teacher to go from point A to point B to Z without losing
connection.An efficient working level of teaching is insured by systematic and
careful planning. A lot is going to happen on the spot in class, sometimes it is
difficult to predict how learners will respond to anything, but the better prepared
the teacher is , the better she is ready to cope with whatever happens.
Creating a warm, friendly class atmosphere makes teaching and learning easier
for all concerned.
For planning many English classes, a basic initial formula would consist of the
following elements:
Objectives: It is important to state explicitly what we want students to
gain from the lesson, what we want to accomplish during the lesson and
evaluate students’ success at the end of the lesson.
Activities, procedures and timing: the main body of a formal plan lists the
activities and procedures in that lesson, together with the times we expect
each of them to take. We will include the aids we are going to use and
show the variety of interactions that will take place in class.
Use symbols to describe the interactions that are taking place: T-teacher;
S-an individual student; C- the teacher working with the whole class;
S,S,S-students working on their own; S_S- students working in pairs;
SS_SS-pairs of students in discussion with other pairs; GG-students
working in groups and so on.
Main activities: These are the main course of the day’s menu, the more
demanding activities to which most of the lesson will be devoted.
Optional activity: This is an activity that you hope to use but are ready to
omit if you are running out of time. (Normally, I simply designate one of
my main activities as optional by marking it If time allows in my lesson
plan.)
Reserve (or spare-tire) activity: This is an activity that is not a key part of
your lesson plan, but you have it available in case the other parts of the
lesson go more quickly than planned, leaving you with unexpected time
at the end of the class
Lesson structure ESA (Engage-Study-Activate ) should be observed in
your lesson plans.
Notes on Lesson Plans
Note that while the lesson plan emphasizes oral skills practice, a dictation
activity is also included to provide a break from the heavy diet of
speaking practice. Students generally stay more alert if activities vary
during a class period.
Having a carefully constructed lesson plan in hand allows you to enter the
classroom with considerably more confi dence.
The lesson plan format attached can be used as a sample
